A New House Bill Would Make That A Requirement

Colorado’s House Bill

25-1192, currently under review and revised on May 5, 2025, aims to make financial literacy a graduation requirement for high school students.

You may be asking yourself: should Colorado schools weave personal finance courses into their curriculum?

The answer is yes.

From budgeting to understanding credit scores and filing taxes, financial education for students will provide the stepping stones for stronger fiscal futures. An informed, responsible and stable economic future begins with education and, when it comes to financial literacy, the earlier the education starts, the better.

As these students prepare for adultho

od, it is important to supply them with the best tools in order to make smart monetary decisions and understand the consequences of an absent financial education. Colorado’s House Bill 25-1192 presents students with an opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of personal finance at a young age, increasing the likelihood of obtaining sustainable wealth.

Building upon its educational foundation, Westerra’s Financial Literacy program for teachers supports educators in their endeavors to empower younger generations. With the help of Westerra, teachers can provide their students with hands-on experience managing their money and gain valuable lessons on various financial resources, preparing them for financial independence and success.

In addition to the Westerra Credit Union Scholarship aimed at graduating seniors, Colorado educators are encouraged to apply for a Westerra School Grant. The Westerra School Grant program rewards $50,000 across multiple school districts annually, enhancing student learning and strengthening the school system with well-rounded educational opportunities.
