Credit Union’s Special Olympics Colorado’s 2023 Polar Plunge

PLUNGE Into Freezing Cold Water, Run A 5k,

Or Do Both At Events Across The State

Special Olympics Colorado (SOCO), Colorado’s premier sports organization for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), will host its annual Westerra Credit Union Polar Plunge Series presented by Murdoch’s Ranch and Home Supply. There are a series of events starting in February and running through October in various locations across the state.

Polar Plunge is a cold-weather fundraiser aimed at raising $583,000 to provide critical funding for nearly 16,000 Special Olympics Colorado athletes. All funds raised from the Polar Plunge series support the sports, health, educational, and athlete leadership programs that our athletes enjoy for free. These life-changing programs positively impact the lives of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, providing them with tools to build their confidence and self-esteem in their everyday lives.

“Polar Plunges are a vital part of our organization. They allow us to support our athletes throughout the year,” stated Megan Scremin, Special Olympics Colorado President and CEO. “Together with our awesome sponsors and the community, we are excited to make a bigger splash than ever with the 2023 Polar Plunge season.”

A Polar Plunge is an incomparable event where participants jump into a chilly body of water to raise awareness for the inclusion and acceptance of people with IDD. Polar Plunge is one of SOCO’s most recognizable fundraisers and provides supporters an easy way to raise funds, connect with athletes, and engage with their communities — all for a great cause.

2023 Plunge Series Locations and Dates:

Aurora Plunge + 5k Run — April 1 — Aurora Reservoir

Windsor Plunge + 5k Run — April 15 — Windsor Lake

Colorado Springs Pool Plunge — April 22 — Rock Ledge Ranch

Avon Plunge — October 28 — Nottingham Lake

Denver and Colorado Springs Plunge participants can enjoy the return of the pool plunge while all other locations will offer participants the opportunity to plunge into a reservoir or lake.

“Together with the community, we can make a huge impact on the lives of these local Special Olympics athletes. Supporting this important cause has become a cherished tradition at Westerra Credit Union. We’re thrilled to be a part of another Polar Plunge season,” said Andrea McDermott, Community Relations Manager for Westerra Credit Union.

The early bird fundraising minimum to plunge is $80 (students and SOCO athletes are $50), $35 to run or $115 or $870 to do both. The early bird deadline varies by location. To learn more about Polar Plunge and to register, visit SpecialOlympicsCO.org/Plunge.

“This project is a clear example of what it means to invest in Arapahoe,” said Board of County Commissioners Chair Leslie Summey. “We couldn’t replace the facility entirely, so we took a thoughtful, creative approach to make the most of what we have and make it more effective.”
